Tier 1 Points Based Scoring Criteria
The Tier 1 visa works on a points system with 95 points being required in order to qualify. For most applicants the qualifying criteria works off four main areas, these are; academic qualifications (bachelors degree minimum), age and previous earnings.Qualifications: To score any points under this category when making your UK visa application, your qualification needs to be at least equivalent to a Bachelors Degree. Qualifications beyond this will score more points.
- Bachelors Degree – 30 points scored
- Masters degree – 35 points scored
- PhD – 50 points scored
- Under 28 – 20 points scored
- 28 or 29 10 points scored
- 30 or 31 5 points scored
If an applicant for the Tier 1 UK visa can demonstrate sufficient proof of previous earnings or qualifications in the UK, 5 points are available.
Earnings: The UK Visa Tier 1 looks at your previous earnings over a recent 12 month period. Applicants with high earnings will score more points.

In addition to the above applicants will need to demonstrate an adequate ability of the English language.
Tier 1 Visa - Length of Permit and Permanent Residency
Successful applicants under the UK visa – Tier 1 category will be granted a visa for three years with the option to extend for a further two before being granted permanent residence for the UK.Tier 1 Visa - Required Available Funds
It is required that you score 10 points by providing you have funds available to support yourself for the first few months. The amount you need to show varies depending upon whether you are applying from within the UK or outside.- If you applying with the UK you need to show proof of ?800 at all times for three months prior to your UK visa, Tier 1 application.
- If your application is made from outside the UK you need to show proof of ?2800 at all times for three months prior to your UK visa, Tier 1 application.
